I began volunteering at Poder Learning Center after my uncle who was a former student asked me if I could help students with their English. It was a big step for me because I’ve always been a quiet person. As I began to work at Poder Learning Center I found that it was the best experience I ever had. It helps me to be more social and more aware of what people go through in adjusting to the culture and language of this country. I was not aware that people leave their country not only to work but also to get a higher education. When I was younger I saw how my parents suffered because they didn’t know English and therefore they couldn’t defend their rights. These memories gave me the strength I needed to help other people. I wouldn’t want the students to go through the same things my parents went through.

As the days go by it makes me happy to see the students communicate in English. I admire all the students that come to Poder. It is wonderful to see them grow academically. Their presence in the classes shows that they want to make a difference in their lives. I admire them for their ambition to learn, their commitment and their dedication they have to come here and study English.

Ever since I started volunteering it has been a great learning experience. It has helped to open my eyes and see that the Hispanic Community has a lot to offer. It has been a remarkable feeling to be able to see so many people willing to learn and improve their lives and their speaking skills. I am glad to be working at Poder and to be part of a hard working staff that is willing to help students succeed. Together we are here to help make a difference in our students’ lives.Nancy Ponce
