Poder’s mission is to provide
the necessary academic tools to
promote human dignity, to
increase employment potential,
and to facilitate participation
in the larger community. Since
1997, we have responded to the
educational needs of adult
immigrants in the primarily
Latino areas of Pilsen/Little
Village and Back of the Yards on
Chicago’s southwest side. In
less than fifteen years, more
than 6,750 students have
attended our tuition free
classes. With new immigrants
arriving daily, the need for
Poder’s services has never been
greater. |

Partners in Progress
Poder recently received funding to
conduct a feasibility study in Tamaula,
Guanajuato, Mexico. During a three week
pilot, Poder offered its signature
ESL/COMP classes to local residents
supported by the May Foundation
(Chicago) and the Fundación Comunitaria
del Bajio (Mexico).

IT’S NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS….
At
the opening of Poder’s Plaza Comunitaria
(Community Plaza), Executive Director
Daniel Loftus (center) shares a laugh
with Consul General of Mexico in Chicago
Ambassador Rodriguez (left) and Mexican
Under Secretary of Public Education Dr.
Székely (right) as he works to cut the
ribbon. The ceremony marked the
beginning of a partnership between Poder
and the Mexican government to provide
students an official diploma from Mexico
upon completion of their studies at
Poder. |
